Even the GameGear version of Rise of the Robots is better than this. I know it’s not customary for these retro game profiles to include a score at the end, but I wouldn’t hesitate to dish out a 2/10. The fatalities are rubbish too – there’s no creativity with pretty much all of them involving a projectile, be it a bomb, fireball or missile, being lobbed at your helpless rival to reduce them to a pile of ash. Do the same in this version and half the time they don’t even duck down let alone raise their fist in the air.

When I press down and punch in the previous versions I could rely on the fact that my chosen fighter would always perform an uppercut. And when you do start moving around the screen the sprites jerk and jolt all over the place. When the opponent faces their second round loss, the winner can perform a finishing move called a 'Fatality' on the loser. Fighting is set as one-on-one combat, allowing each player to perform a variety of punches, kicks, and special moves in order to defeat their opponent. Here, there’s no animation at all when a character is stood still. Mortal Kombat is a side-scrolling fighting game. Mortal Kombat 3 is the third installment of the most violent fighting game franchise of all time, adding new gameplay elements while setting the plot in a post-apocalyptic Earthrealm. The animation, or lack of it, is the first cause of concern – even in the first Mortal Kombat when the characters were stood on the spot they still swayed back and fourth, shaking their fists with rage or whatever. Simply put, it’s a massive step backwards. The steps to do it in the Game Boy version (at the end of Round 3, hold Punch and press Down, Down, Down, Down) do not appear to work in this one. Mercy The Mercy finishing move appears to exist in some form in the game. Mortal Kombat 3, however, is a game so atrocious that it’s usually in and out of the cartridge slot within two minutes flat. The Game Gear Mortal Kombat 3 was a Europe-exclusive colorized version of the Game Boy game with even worse controls. They don’t have as many characters or as many backgrounds as the Mega Drive versions, but the controls are responsive and they’re still fun to play.

Now, I’m quite happy to sit down and spend the twenty minutes or so that it takes to finish Mortal Kombat 1 or 2 on the GameGear.
